The Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the leading research institution within the Russian Academy of Sciences, engaged in the study of world history. The Institute was established in October 1968. Prior to that, in 1934-1968, work on world history was carried out as part of the unified Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

More than 200 people work at IVI RAS, including 6 academicians of the RAS, 4 corresponding members of the RAS, more than 180 doctors and candidates of sciences.

Main areas of research:

  • modern models of the historical process;
  • problems of interdisciplinary dialogue;
  • historical and cultural anthropology;
  • collective memory and historical consciousness;
  • history of religion and church;
  • formation and development of civil society.

Traditionally, the focus is on the history of the countries of Western and Eastern Europe and individual European regions, North and Latin America, African countries. Separate areas of research formed at the Institute in the early 2000s are Russia in world history, the history of the CIS countries. Special attention The Institute focuses on the problems of interaction and mutual perception of cultures and societies in the world historical process.

One of the key areas of the Institute's work is the integration of science and education.
